Suit Tailoring Series: Fitting a Suit Jacket

When it comes to suit tailoring it’s best to start at the beginning which always comes down to fit.

The way a suit initially fits can be changed dramatically because suits are designed from the onset to be altered. When the suit is originally sewn there are lots of handy details that make alterations possible such as extra seam allowance and hem allowance along with different ways to get inside of the jacket and lining itself to make adjustments.

In the video below, we will walk you through the different types of alterations that are available for tailoring a suit jacket.

They will be covered through examining different areas of the body:

  • Sleeves

  • Girth / Body

  • Shoulders

  • Torso Length

Regarding these alterations, many things can be done to both take in and let out or shorten and lengthen a suit jacket through the sleeves and overall body.

The only thing that cannot be made longer is the length, otherwise most two jackets can be made bigger or smaller within generally a two size range up or down.

Tune in to the video below to watch the pinning and marking process for a typical suit jacket fitting!

Now you’re ready to jump inside the lining and see how the alterations are done, next we’ll embark on one of our most requested alterations; taking in or letting out the body of jacket. Stay tuned!
